All-time Record Hottest and Coldest Temperatures Ever Recorded in Detroit, Michigan

Weather temperatures have been officially kept in Detroit, Michigan since 1874. These are the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Detroit since 1874.

While Detroit can get pretty hot in the summer and pretty cold in the winter, the city has a milder climate than many other parts of Michigan. This is reflected by the differences between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Detroit (126), compared to the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in the state of Michigan (163); a big difference of 37 degrees.
Record Hottest and Coldest Temperatures Ever Recorded in Detroit, Michigan
All-time Record Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in Detroit is 105 Degrees
The hottest temperature ever recorded in the city of Detroit is 105 degrees, which occurred on July 24, 1934. Days when the temperature reaches 100 degrees or more are not common in Detroit, but I would not say they are rare.
The last time Detroit had 100 degree days was in 2012. It was 102 degrees on both July 4th and July 17th in the summer of 2012.
  • Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in Michigan is 112 Degrees
The all-time record hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of Michigan is 112 degrees, which occurred on July 13, 1936, in Mio. The small city of Mio is located in north-central Michigan, in the Au Sable River valley, about 190 miles north of Detroit.

The year 1936 was a very hot one in the United States. Fifteen states in the country had their record hottest temperatures set in the summer of 1936.

The difference between the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in Detroit (105) and the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of Michigan (112) is seven degrees. Not a huge difference, but still a surprising one considering Mio is well north of Detroit.
All-time Record Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded in Detroit is -21 Degrees
The coldest temperature ever recorded in the city of Detroit is -21 degrees, which occurred on January 21, 1984. Below zero temperature days are not at all rare in Detroit, as the city averages four days each winter when the temperature reaches or drops below zero.
Detroit is certainly known as a cold weather city. I have relatives who live in Hamtramck, Michigan, which is a suburb of Detroit, and they love the area, but even they are not too fond of the winters in Detroit.
  • Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded in Michigan is -51 Degrees
The coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of Michigan is -51 degrees, which occurred on February 9, 1934, at Vanderbilt. The small town of Vanderbilt is located in northern Michigan, about 240 miles northwest of Detroit.

If you want to know how cold -51 degrees is, only 12 other states have ever had a lower temperature reading. Michigan is really a great state, filled with great things to see and do, but it gets awfully cold in the winter in the Great Lakes State.
The difference between the all-time coldest temperature ever recorded in Detroit (-21), and the all-time coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of Michigan (-51) is a whopping 30 degrees. That is a huge difference in temperature.
Even though it gets pretty cold in Detroit in the winter, it gets a lot colder in other parts of Michigan each year.
