As anyone who has ever been there knows the city of Houston has one of the mildest weather temperature climates in the United States. Houston has an average daily temperature of 68 degrees and the temperature rises to over 90 degrees in the city an average of 98 times a year. But on rare occasions it does snow in Houston, Texas.
The record for the most snow to ever fall in the city of Houston is, believe it or not, 20". Yup, that's 20 inches of snow and it occurred on February 14-15, 1895. Reportedly, some areas in and around Houston got up to 31" of snow during that extreme weather snowfall event. That was a highly unusual event to say the least but it has snowed in Houston over 30 times since then.
Here is a list of documented cases where at least 1" of snow fell in Houston, Texas.
1. February 14-15, 1895 - as mentioned above 20" of snow fell in the city
2. February 12, 1960 - up to 4.4" of snow fell in Houston
3. January 22, 1940 - 3.0" of snow
4. January 30, 1949 - 2.6" of snow
5. December 21-22, 1929 - 2.5" of snow
6. January 11, 1973 - 2.0" of snow
7. December 22, 1989 - 1.7" of snow
T-8. February 9-10, 1973 - 1.4" of snow
T-8. February 17-18, 1973 - 1.4" of snow
T-8. February 2, 1980 - 1.4" of snow
T-8. December 10, 2010 - 1.4" of snow
T-12. January 2, 1985 - 1.0" of snow
T-12. December 4, 2009 - 1.0" of snow
In addition to the times when at least 1" of snow fell in Houston, there have been 8 times when measurable snow occurred ranging from .1" to .8". The last occurrence was on February 12, 1994, when .1" of snow fell.
There have also been 14 times since 1895 when trace amounts of snow fell in the city. The last such occurrence was on February 23, 2010.
Will it snow in Houston this winter? Well, since 1895, there have been just 35 times when it snowed in Houston ranging from an incredible 20" of snow down to trace amounts. So the odds are pretty good that it will not snow in Houston this winter but it certainly could happen.
