Record Hottest and Coldest Weather Temperatures Ever Recorded in Riverside, California

Weather temperatures have been officially kept in Riverside, California (Fire Station Three) since 1893. These are the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Riverside since 1893.

Located along the Santa Ana River in Southern California, the city of Riverside has a much milder climate than the extremes found in the Golden State. This is born out by the differences between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Riverside, compared to the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures recorded in California.
The difference between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Riverside is 117 degrees. The difference between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in the state of California is 179 degrees; a huge difference of 62 degrees.
California is one of the most extreme weather states in the United States by temperatures.

All-time Record Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in Riverside is 118 Degrees
The hottest weather temperature ever officially recorded in the city of Riverside is 118 degrees, which has occurred on three different dates. The first time it was a record 118 degrees in Riverside was on June 16, 1917, the second time was on July 17, 1925 and the third time was on July 6, 2018.
Days when the temperature soars to 100 degrees or hotter are not rare in Riverside. In fact, the city has had 100 degree weather temperature days in eight out of the 12 months of the year (March through October). Riverside averages 96 days a year when the temperature is 90 degrees or hotter.
I've been to Riverside a couple of times, and it's an interesting city to visit. The Mission Inn is a place well worth visiting, and other cool places to visit include the Fox Performing Arts Center, where a version of "Gone With the Wind" was first shown publicly in 1939, and the University of California, Riverside, which has a 161 foot high carillon bell tower on campus.
  • Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in California is 134 Degrees
The all-time record hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of California, and the world is 134 degrees, which occurred on July 10, 1913, in Death Valley, which is located about 220 miles northeast of Riverside.

The difference between the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in Riverside (118) and the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of California (134) is 16 degrees. A big statistical difference.
All-time Record Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded in Riverside is 1 Degrees
The coldest weather temperature ever officially recorded in Riverside is one degrees, which occurred on January 20, 1911.
The one degrees reading from January 20, 1911, looks suspicious to me, as the next coldest date in Riverside is 19 degrees, which occurred in January of 1950. That is a big difference of 18 degrees.
In any case, Riverside is a warm weather place, as the temperature drops below freezing an average of only 16 times a year in the city.
  • Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded in California is -45 Degrees
The coldest temperature ever officially recorded in the state of California is -45 degrees, which occurred on January 20, 1937, in Boca, a town that was located about 500 miles north of Riverside, but is now mostly submerged under the Boca Dam.

The difference between the all-time coldest temperature ever recorded in Riverside (1) and the all-time coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of California (-45) is 46 degrees. A huge statistical difference.
Overall, the city of Riverside has a much milder climate than the extremes found in the state of California. While Riverside can get pretty hot, it does not get as hot as Death Valley, and the city stays much warmer than the extreme cold places in California.

  1. An example of a "mild" environment is that of Torrance, where it's pretty much room temperature year-round. Riverside, where I live, is hotter than blazes for months at a time. Definitely not "mild"!

  2. Mild compared to the extremes in California. Riverside is milder than Death Valley at the hot extreme and milder than Boca at the cold extreme. No doubt a place like San Diego is milder than Riverside in both regards but I was talking about mild compared to California's extremes.
