Did you know that among cities with populations of 400,000 or more people the northernmost city in the United States has a higher record hottest weather temperature than the southernmost city? Not only is that strange and amazing weather fact true, the northernmost city's record hottest weather temperature is a full 3 degrees hotter than the southernmost city.
The northernmost city in the USA with a population of at least 400,000 is Seattle, Washington. Seattle has a population of some 700,000 people in the city proper and not only is it the largest northernmost city in the United States, Seattle is also father north than Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal in Canada.
The southernmost city in the USA with a population of at least 400,000 is Miami, Florida. Miami has a population of some 450,000 people in the city proper which makes it the largest southernmost city with at least 400,000 people in the United States.
Honolulu, Hawaii is farther south than Miami but it's population is 375,000 people. Not that it really matters because Seattle also has a much higher record weather temperature than Honolulu does. More on that in a minute.
Northernmost City in USA has Higher Record Hottest Weather Temperature than Southernmost City
- Seattle's Record Hottest Weather Temperature is 103 Degrees
The hottest weather temperature ever recorded in Seattle, Washington is 103 degrees which occurred on July 29, 2009. Dating back to 1894, Seattle has only had three days when the temperature reached 100 degrees or hotter.
In addition to the record 103 degrees, it was also 100 degrees exactly in Seattle on July 16, 1941, and on July 20, 1994. It's not too surprising Seattle has only had three 100 degree weather temperature days considering how far north the city is.
- Miami's Record Hottest Weather Temperature is 100 Degrees
The hottest weather temperature ever recorded in Miami, Florida is 100 degrees exactly which occurred on July 21, 1942. That is the only time Miami has ever had a 100 degree weather temperature day.
If you think that's strange get this. Miami has never had a day when the record temperature is 99 degrees. So other than the 100 degree day the hottest weather temperature ever recorded in Miami is 98 degrees.
The weather data for Miami goes all the way back to 1895 so it's no fluke. It just does not get that hot in Miami temperature wise, though, it feels a lot hotter due to the humidity.
As mentioned above, Honolulu is the southernmost city in the USA if we go below 400,000 people. The record hottest weather temperature ever recorded in Honolulu is 95 degrees which is a full 8 degrees below the record temperature of 103 for Seattle.
It certainly is strange but the northernmost city in the USA (Seattle with a 103 degree record) has a hotter record weather temperature than the two southernmost cities (Miami at 100 degrees and Honolulu at 95 degrees). That is an amazing weather fact.
