All-time Record Hottest and Coldest Temperatures Ever Recorded in Rochester, New York

Weather temperatures have been officially kept in Rochester, New York since 1872. These are the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Rochester since 1872.

Located along the southern shoreline of Lake Ontario in Upstate New York, the city of Rochester has a much milder climate than the extremes found in the Empire State. This is born out by the differences between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Rochester, compared to the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures recorded in New York State.
The difference between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Rochester is 124 degrees. The difference between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in the state of New York is 160 degrees; a big difference of 36 degrees.
Record Hottest and Coldest Temperatures Ever Recorded in Rochester, New York
All-time Record Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in Rochester is 102 Degrees
The hottest temperature ever officially recorded in Rochester is 102 degrees, which has occurred on two different dates. The first time it was a record 102 degrees in Rochester was on July 9, 1936, and the second time was one day later on July 10, 1936.
Days when the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees are rare in Rochester. Since 1872, the city has only had five days when the temperature reached or exceeded 100 degrees.
I have many relatives who live in and around Rochester, and I have visited the city many times, usually in the summer. Though the weather can be rough in Rochester in the winter, it's usually pretty nice in the summer.
The Rochester area has some great places to visit and sights to see. The Lake Ontario shoreline near Rochester is pretty cool to see, especially the formations in Chimney Bluffs State Park about 20 miles east of the city.
There is also a large waterfall called High Falls that drops right in the city, and sometimes they light it up at night and have laser shows there. There's also the George Eastman House, which you can tour, and if you really want to see a spectacular sight head to the Grand Canyon of the East in Letchworth State Park about 40 miles south of Rochester.
As a bit of weather trivia some might find hard to believe, the record hottest temperature in Rochester of 102 degrees is two degrees hotter than the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in Miami, Florida. Rochester is about 1,400 miles north of Miami.
  • Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in New York State is 108 Degrees
The all-time record hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of New York is 108 degrees, which occurred on July 22, 1926, in Troy.

The city of Troy is located about 220 miles east of Rochester. I've been Saratoga, which is only 30 miles north of Troy, many times for the horse races, and it can get really hot there in late July and August.
The difference between the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in Rochester (102) and the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of New York (108) is six degrees. Not a huge difference, but still a statistical difference.
All-time Record Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded in Rochester is -22 Degrees
The coldest temperature ever officially recorded in the city of Rochester is -22 degrees, which occurred on February 9, 1934.
Below zero temperatures are not at all uncommon in Rochester in the winter. Since 1872, the city has had well over a dozen days when the temperature dropped to -15 degrees or colder.
  • Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded in New York State is -52 Degrees
The coldest temperature ever officially recorded in the state of New York is -52 degrees, which occurred on February 18, 1979, in Old Forge.

Located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, Old Forge is roughly 180 miles northeast of Rochester. I have relatives who live on the Tug Hill Plateau, which is just west of Old Forge, and one of them used to claim he once had a thermometer reading of -60 degrees in one winter. That would be unofficial, of course.
The difference between the all-time coldest temperature ever recorded in Rochester (-22) and the all-time coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of New York (-52) is 30 degrees. A big statistical difference.
Overall, even though Rochester does not have the greatest weather in the world, the city does have a milder climate than the extremes found in New York State.
