Record Hottest and Coldest Temperatures Ever Recorded in San Francisco, California

Official weather temperature records have been kept in San Francisco, California since 1874. These are the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures in the city of San Francisco since 1874.

The city of San Francisco is beautifully located along the Pacific Ocean, which helps to keep the climate in the city quite moderate. As you will see, San Francisco is a city that tends not to get too hot or cold.
I've been to San Francisco a number of times, and the climate in the city is usually very nice. I've also been all over the state of California, and certainly San Francisco has a much nicer and milder climate than many other places in California.
The difference between the record hottest and coldest temperatures in the city of San Francisco is 79 degrees. The difference between the record hottest and coldest temperatures in the state of California is 179; a monumental difference of 100 degrees.

All-time Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in San Francisco is 106 Degrees
The hottest temperature ever recorded in the city of San Francisco, California is 106 degrees, which occurred on September 1, 2017.
Days when the temperature reaches 100 degrees or more are not common in San Francisco. Since 1874, the temperature has reached or exceeded 100 degrees only about a dozen times. It can get much hotter in the areas around San Francisco, but the record listed here is just for the city itself.
  • Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in California is 134 Degrees
The hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of California is 134 degrees, which occurred on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley. Not only is 134 degrees the hottest temperature ever recorded in California, it's also the hottest temperature ever recorded on planet Earth.

If you have never been to Death Valley, it is one hot place. Despite the heat, I've always enjoyed visiting Death Valley and seeing places like Badwater Basin, Scottie's Castle, Dante's View, the Devil's Golf Course, and the surrounding sand dunes and mountains. Just a beautiful place.
The difference between the record hottest temperature ever recorded in San Francisco (106) and the record hottest temperature ever recorded in California (134) is a whopping 28 degrees. Without a doubt, the city of San Francisco is a much cooler place than the record extreme in California.
All-time Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded in San Francisco is 27 Degrees
The record coldest temperature ever recorded in San Francisco is 27 degrees, which occurred on December 11, 1932. Below freezing weather temperature days in San Francisco are about as rare as 100 degree weather temperature days.
With very few below freezing temperature days, the city of San Francisco rarely gets snow. Since 1856, San Francisco has seen snow about a dozen times, with a record 3.5" having fallen on December 31, 1882. The surrounding hills and mountains around San Francisco have seen many more colder days, and more snowfall than the city itself has.
  • Record Coldest Temperature in California is -45 Degrees
The record coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of California is -45 degrees, which occurred on January 20, 1937, in Boca. The small town of Boca is located some 190 miles northeast of San Francisco, along Route 80 a few miles before the Nevada border.

The difference between the record coldest temperature ever recorded in San Francisco (27) and the record coldest temperature ever recorded in California (-45) is a huge 72 degrees. Just a massive difference.
Without any doubt, based upon temperature records, the city of San Francisco has a much milder climate than does the extremes that can be found in the state of California.
