Official weather records have been kept in Los Angeles, California since 1877. These are the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Los Angeles since 1877.

The city of Los Angeles is well known for its generally beautiful sunny weather. Certainly the city has a much milder climate than do most cities in the United States. Comparing the record hottest and coldest temperatures in Los Angeles and the state of California also reveals the city has a much milder climate than the extremes found in the Golden State.
The difference between the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures in Los Angeles is 85 degrees. The difference between the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures in the state of California is 179 degrees; a huge difference of 94 degrees.

The All-time Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded in Los Angeles is 113 Degrees
The all-time record hottest temperature ever recorded in Los Angeles is 113 degrees, which occurred on September 27, 2010. As people living in Los Angeles know, 100 degree temperature days in the city are not particularly rare.
What might surprise some people is that the month of September is the only month in Los Angeles weather history that has had a 100 degree day on every single date in at least one year since 1877. June, July, and August all have multiple dates that have never had a 100 degree day.
  • Record Hottest Temperature in the State of California is 134 Degrees
The hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of California is 134 degrees, which occurred on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch (now known as Furnace Creek) in Death Valley. Not only is that the hottest temperature ever recorded in California, it is also the hottest recognized temperature ever recorded on planet Earth.

Having been to Death Valley a few times, it does not surprise me that it holds the record for the hottest temperature on the planet. I remember one time visiting Badwater Basin, which is 282 feet below sea level, and as we got out of our air-conditioned car, the heat hit us with a blast of hot air like when you open a oven door to see if your food is ready.
The difference between the record hottest temperature in Los Angeles (113) and the record hottest temperature in the state of California (134) is 21 degrees. A huge difference, especially considering that 113 degrees itself is pretty hot.
The All-time Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded in Los Angeles is 28 Degrees
The all-time coldest temperature ever recorded in Los Angeles is 28 degrees. The record has been reached three times, as it was 28 degrees in Los Angeles on February 6, 1883, January 7, 1913, and January 4, 1949.
Below freezing temperatures are relatively rare in Los Angeles. Even rarer is snowfall in the city, though, Los Angeles did get 2" of snow back in January of 1932. The mountains around the city experience far more below freezing temperatures, and a lot more snowfall.
  • Record Coldest Temperature in the State of California is -45 Degrees
The coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of California is -45 degrees, which occurred on January 20, 1937, in the small town of Boca. The small town of Boca is located in western California, about seven miles northeast of Truckee, very close to the California-Nevada border along Route 80.

The difference between the record coldest temperature in Los Angeles (28) and the record coldest temperature in the state of California (-45) is a whopping 73 degrees.
California is a large very diversified state in terms of climate and weather, and I think it's pretty safe to say that Los Angeles has a much more milder climate than most parts of the state, certainly the extreme areas of California.
