The all-time coldest day in New York City history occurred on February 9, 1934 when the temperature was -15 degrees. The last time New York City experienced a below zero temperature day was on February 14, 2016, when it was -1 degrees. That's a pretty cold Valentine's Day but it's not cold enough to make the list of ten coldest days in New York City history.
I live in the New York City area and it can get pretty cold in the winter months in the NYC area. Generally, though, days when the temperature goes below zero are pretty rare. During the coldest month of the year in NYC, January, the average daily high is 39.1 degrees. In every other month of the year the average daily high temperature in NYC is over 40 degrees.
