What is the Coldest Weather Temperature Ever Recorded in Utah?

What is the coldest weather temperature ever recorded in the state of Utah? This is a weather trivia question that people living in Utah or people thinking of visiting Utah including Zion, Canyonlands, Temple Square and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Arches, Bryce Canyon and all the other great tourist attractions in the state will find interesting.

Utah is certainly considered a cold weather state since it is located in the Rocky Mountains and has long borders with Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. Despite that, the record coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of Utah is probably a lot colder than most people might imagine.

What is the Coldest Weather Temperature Ever Recorded in Utah?

  • -69.3 degrees below zero on February 1, 1985

The coldest weather temperature ever officially recorded in the state of Utah is -69 degrees below zero. That record low temperature for Utah was recorded on February 1, 1985, at Peter's Sink or really Peter Sinks.

Peter Sinks is a natural limestone sinkhole about 1/2 mile in diameter located in northeastern Utah some 20 miles northeast of Logan and about 6 miles south of the Idaho border and 6 miles west of Bear Lake. Peter Sinks is like a large bowl where cold air can get trapped and it's at an elevation of 8,164 feet so it's pretty cold there most of the time.

How does a -69.3 degrees below zero record weather coldest temperature stack up vs the rest of the United States? It's ranks as the 3rd coldest record weather temperature out of the 50 states and second coldest temperature ever recorded in the lower 48.

The coldest weather temperature ever recorded anywhere in the United States is -80 degrees below zero which occurred on January 23, 1971, in Prospect Creek, Alaska. The coldest weather temperature ever recorded in the lower 48 states is -70 degrees below zero which occurred on January 20, 1954, in Rogers Pass, Montana.
