Below zero weather temperature days are very rare in Athens as the city has only had three below zero temperature days since 1884. Athens averages 50 days a year when the temperature drops below freezing.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of Georgia is -17 degrees, which occurred on January 27, 1940, at Civilian Conservation Camp F-16 located in northwestern Georgia near the city of Lafayette about 140 miles northwest of Athens.

The difference between the all-time coldest temperature ever recorded in Athens (-4) and the all-time coldest temperature in the state of Georgia (-17) is 13 degrees. A pretty big difference and much larger a difference than the hottest temperatures between the city and state.

Overall, Athens is a city with pretty moderate weather temperatures and the home of the Georgia Bulldogs has a milder climate in temperature variations than the extremes found in the state of Georgia.
