What is the Coldest Weather Temperature Ever Recorded in California?

What is the coldest weather temperature ever recorded in the state of California? This is a weather trivia question that people living in California or people thinking of visiting California including the Pacific Coast Highway, Yosemite, Death Valley, the Redwoods, the Sequoia Trees and all the other great tourist attractions in the state will find interesting.

California is certainly not considered a cold weather state since it is home to such warm weather cities as Los Angeles and San Diego and the fact that the hottest weather temperature ever recorded on the planet was in California. Despite that, the record coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of California is probably a lot colder than most people might imagine.

What is the Coldest Weather Temperature Ever Recorded in California?

  • -45 degrees on January 20, 1937

The coldest weather temperature ever officially recorded in the state of California is -45 degrees below zero. That record low temperature for California was recorded on January 20, 1937, in Boca.

Boca is located at the tail end of the Boca Reservoir just north of Route 80 and 6.5 miles northeast of Truckee in eastern California only a few miles from the Nevada border and about 15 miles north of Lake Tahoe. After the transcontinental railroads were completed in the late 1800's, the town of Boca thrived due to its cold weather as it became a huge commercial ice cutting center to provide ice for keeping California produce fresh on rail cars.

Much of the town of Boca was swallowed up in 1939 when the Boca Dam was built. The area remains pretty cold today as the average daily temperature in Boca is just 42.7 degrees and the town averages 272 days a year when the temperature drops below the freezing mark of 32 degrees.

How does a -45 degrees below zero record weather coldest temperature stack up vs the rest of the United States? It's ranks as the 22nd coldest record weather temperature out of the 50 states three degrees colder than Pennsylvania in 23rd place and two degrees warmer than Iowa and Nebraska in 20th place.

The coldest weather temperature ever recorded anywhere in the United States is -80 degrees below zero which occurred on January 23, 1971, in Prospect Creek, Alaska. The coldest weather temperature ever recorded in the lower 48 states is -70 degrees below zero which occurred on January 20, 1954, in Rogers Pass, Montana.
