New York is one of the most populated and most visited cities in the world. For all the people living in New York and all the tourists thinking of visiting the city, here is a list of the hottest temperature records for each month of the year.
The list can be very useful for tourists visiting New York at any time of the year. Also listed for each month are great places to visit in New York during that time of the year.
In addition to the record hottest temperature and places to visit for each month, I'm also listing the date and year in which the record occurred. If you are not familiar with New York you might be pretty surprised at some of the record hottest temperatures for each month.
The temperature records below date back to 1869. All the data was recorded in Central Park in Manhattan by the National Weather Service.
January – 72 degrees
The record high temperature for January in New York is 72 degrees, and it's been reached twice. The first time was on January 26, 1950, and the second time was on January 6, 2007.
Since the weather can be cold and unpredictable in January, great places to visit in New York during the first month are the many great art museums like the Met, the Guggenheim, and the Whitney. All three art museums house great collections by some of the masters.
February – 75 degrees
The record high temperature for February in New York is 75 degrees, and it's also been reached twice. The first time was on February 25, 1930, and the second time was on February 24, 1985.
February is another month with unpredictable weather in the city. Another great indoor place to visit is the Museum of Natural History. This author is a member of the Museum of Natural History and visitors could spend the whole month of February here and not see everything this great museum has to offer.
March – 86 degrees
The record high temperature for March is 86 degrees, and it's also been reached twice. The first time was on March 29, 1945, and the second time was on March 31, 1998.
The best place to visit in New York in March is the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. That's because the cherry blossoms bloom in March and it's a beautiful site to see.
April – 96 degrees
The record high temperature for April in New York is 96 degrees, and it's also been reached twice. The first time was on April 18, 1976, and the second time was on April 17, 2002. The author fondly remembers the first time it was 96 degrees in April as he was on Easter break from school and all the kids in the neighborhood were running around in shorts and t-shirts like it was summer.
April is a great month to take in a Broadway play in Times Square. Search online for discount tickets and you can find places where most plays will be half-price.
May – 99 degrees
The record high temperature for May in New York is 99 degrees. That record high was set on May 19, 1962.
Two great places to visit in May in New York are Yankee Stadium in the Bronx where the New Yankees play and Citi Field in Flushing where the Mets play. New York is a huge baseball town.
June – 101 degrees
The record high temperature for June in New York is 101 degrees, which has occurred twice. The first time was on June 29, 1934, and the second time was on June 27, 1966.
As the weather heats up in New York it's a great time to take a ferry ride from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan out to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. The ferry also stops at Ellis Island where your ancestors may have gone before entering the United States.
July – 106 degrees
The record high temperature for July in New York is 106 degrees which occurred on July 9, 1936. The 106 degrees is also the record hottest temperature ever recorded in Central Park in New York City.
July is a fun time in New York City as the nation celebrates July 4th. The Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Show takes place along the East River annually.
August – 104 degrees
The record high temperature for August in New York is 104 degrees. That record high occurred on August 7, 1918.
August is a great month in New York to take a Circle Line sightseeing cruise around Manhattan. Manhattan is an island and the Circle Line cruise goes all the way around it providing spectacular views of the whole city.
September – 102 degrees
The record high temperature for September in New York is 102 degrees. That record high occurred on September 2, 1953. Only the months of June, July, August and September have reached 100 degrees in New York.
The weather is still pretty good in September and it's a great time to visit the famed Bronx Zoo. If you go on a Wednesday admission is free.
October – 94 degrees
The record high temperature for October in New York is 94 degrees. That record high occurred on October 5, 1941.
As the leaves change over, October is a great time to visit Central Park in Manhattan. As you stroll around keep an eye out for the 29 famous sculptures in the park.
November – 84 degrees
The record high temperature for November in New York is 84 degrees which occurred on November 1, 1950.
A great site in New York each November is the famed Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Your kids will love the huge balloons featuring such great characters as SpongeBob SquarePants.
December – 75 degrees
The record high temperature for December in New York is 75 degrees which occurred on December 7, 1998.
The best place to visit in New York in December is Rockefeller Center. It's a beautiful festive place in December where they light up the big Christmas tree and you can even ice skate at the famed plaza if you are so inclined.
