Coldest Temperature Record for Each Month of the Year for New York

 Here is a list of the all time coldest monthly temperature records for New York. New York is one of the most populated and most visited cities in the world.

For all the people living in New York and all the tourists thinking of visiting the city, here is a list of the coldest temperature records for each month of the year. The list can be very useful for tourists visiting New York at any time of the year.

What is interesting to note is that New York set five daily all time coldest temperature records over the past two years. All five of the new daily coldest temperature records are noted below. One just missed setting a new all time monthly record.

The temperature data for New York dates back to 1869. All the data presented in this article is from the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service provides weather forecasts, weather warnings and historical weather data to the public and organizations in the United States. The National Weather Service is an agency of the federal government of the United States so almost all its info is in the public domain.

January - -6 degrees

The record coldest temperature for the month of January in New York is -6 degrees which occurred on January 24, 1882. Since 1869, New York City has had a little over two dozen days when the temperature dropped below zero in January.

February - -15 degrees

The record coldest temperature for February in New York is -15 degrees which occurred on February 9, 1934. That is also the all time coldest temperature ever recorded in New York.

On Valentine's Day, February 14, 2016, New York set a new all time daily coldest temperature record of -1 degree. New York City has had about 20 days since 1869 when the temperature dropped below zero in the month of February.

March - 3 degrees

The record coldest temperature for March in New York is 3 degrees, which occurred on March 5, 1872.

April - 12 degrees

The record coldest temperature for April in New York is 12 degrees which occurred on April 1, 1923, and that's no April Fool's Day joke.

May - 32 degrees

The record coldest temperature for May in New York is 32 degrees which occurred on May 6, 1891.

Of Special Note: on May 9, 2020, New York set a new all time daily coldest temperature record of 34 degrees. Just two degrees off the all time monthly record. On May 8, 2020, New York also set a new all time coldest ever daily temperature record at 36 degrees.

June - 44 degrees

The record coldest temperature for June in New York is 44 degrees which occurred on June 1, 1945.

July - 52 degrees

The record coldest temperature for July in New York is 52 degrees which occurred on July 1, 1943.

August - 50 degrees

The record coldest temperature for August in New York is 50 degrees which has occurred four times. The first two times occurred on August 27 and 28, 1885, the third time was on August 30, 1965, the fourth time on August 31, 1976, and the fifth time was on August 29, 1986.

September - 39 degrees

The record coldest temperature for September in New York is 39 degrees which occurred on September 30, 1912.

October - 28 degrees

The record coldest temperature for October in New York is 28 degrees. That record low occurred on October 27, 1936.

November - 5 degrees

The record coldest temperature for November in New York is 5 degrees which occurred on November 30, 1875.

Of Special Note: New York set three all time coldest daily temperature records in November of 2019. On November 13, 2019, it was 23 degrees in New York. On November 12, 2019, it was 25 degrees and on November 8, 2019, it was 29 degrees in New York City. All three are new coldest ever daily temperature records for those dates in New York dating back to 1869.

December - -13 degrees

The record coldest temperature for December in New York is -13 degrees which occurred on December 30, 1917. That is the second coldest temperature ever recorded in the city dating back to 1869.
