There are three major one million or more population cities in the United States that have had 100 degree weather temperature days in the month of March?
Can you name all three cities? Here are a few hints.
First, though, when we say one million population cities we are talking about metro areas. There are some 53 cities in the United States that have metro area populations of over one million people.
One of the three cities that has had a 100 degree temperature reading in March is a capital city. This should narrow down your choices considerably. Capital cities like Albany, Boston, Denver, Indianapolis, Des Moines, Madison and Salt Lake City located in more northern states can easily be eliminated.
Two of the cities are in the same state. This is another really good clue. Remember we are talking about cities with metro area populations over 1 million people. How many states actually have multiple cities with populations over one million? You can eliminate all the cities in states that do not have multiple high population cities.
Los Angeles is not one of the cities, as LA has only hit 99 degrees in the month of March.
None of the cities is in Florida. While there are multiple one million population cities in Florida (metro area), it's pretty rare when cities in Florida actually reach 100 degrees and none of them have in the month of March.
Las Vegas is also not one of the cities. Las Vegas can get really hot, it's all time official record high temperature is 117 degrees which has been reached four times, but Vegas tends to really heat up after the month of March.
There are many smaller cities that have had 100 degree weather temperatures days in the month of March. Some of those smaller cities are Palm Springs, Laughlin, Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City, Del Rio, Brownsville, McAllen, Carlsbad (New Mexico), Lake Elsinore (California), San Pasqual, Borrego Springs (California), Pomona-Fairplex, San Gabriel and Laredo.
What 3 Major USA Cities Have Had 100 Degree Weather Temperatures in March?
1. San Antonio
San Antonio is the first major city in the United States on the list. San Antonio is first because it is also the only major city in the country to have a 100 degree weather temperature day in February.
It was 100 degrees exactly in San Antonio on February 21, 1996. San Antonio also has had two days in March at 100 degrees on March 6, 1991 and on March 28, 1971.
2. Phoenix
Phoenix is the only state capital city in the United States with a 100 degree weather temperature day in the month of March. It was exactly 100 degrees on March 26, 1988, in Phoenix which is the capital city of Arizona.
3. Dallas
Dallas is the third major city in the United States to have had 100 degree weather temperature days in the month of March. It exactly 100 degree in Dallas on both March 9, 1911 and on March 21, 1916.
Both of those dates are over 100 years old and Dallas has not really come that close to another 100 degree weather temperature day in March in over 100 years. The closest Dallas has come to another 100 degree day in March in modern times is 96 degrees on March 5, 1991.
Looking at the three cities, both Dallas and San Antonio have reached 100 degrees twice in the month of March while Phoenix has only reached the century mark once in the month. That does not mean that Dallas and San Antonio are hotter weather cities than Phoenix.
On an annual basis, Phoenix averages 110 days a year when the temperature soars above the century mark, while Dallas only averages 18 days annually when the temperature reaches 100 degrees and San Antonio averages just 17.
