Record Hottest and Coldest Weather Temperatures Ever Recorded in Charleston, South Carolina

Weather temperatures have been officially kept in Charleston, South Carolina since 1938. These are the all-time record hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Charleston since 1938.

Located on Charleston Harbor just inland from the Atlantic Ocean, the city of Charleston has a much milder climate than the extremes found in the Palmetto State. This is born out by the differences between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Charleston, compared to the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures recorded in South Carolina.
The difference between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in Charleston is 99 degrees. The difference between the all-time hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in the state of South Carolina is 130 degrees; a difference of 31 degrees.

Days when the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees are not overly common in Charleston, as the breezes coming in off the Atlantic Ocean keep the temperatures below the century mark most of the time. Charleston averages 53 days a year when the temperature reaches 90 degrees or above.
I've been to Charleston a number of times, and it is a great place to visit. Filled with luxury hotels, resorts, motels, and restaurants, and located near some great beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, the Charleston area is a fantastic place to vacation in. The weather is usually pretty good too, especially for snowbirds in the winter.
As a bit of weather trivia some might find hard to believe, the record hottest temperature in Charleston of 105 degrees is five degrees hotter than the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in Miami, Florida. Charleston is almost 600 miles north of Miami.

That was a highly unusual event for Charleston, as the city has only had one other date since 1938 when the temperature dropped below 10 degrees. Charleston averages just 32 days a year when the temperature drops below the freezing mark.
The city used to run ads in the New York City area, where I live, bragging that Charleston has had at least one 80 degree or higher temperature day in every January since weather temperatures have been kept in the area. That was an ad that always got my attention in the middle of winter in New York, and made me want to go to Charleston.
