  1. You are incorrect regarding the coldest temperature ever recorded in Eugene. It was -12° in early December, 1972. I remember it, because it was my first quarter here in graduate school. I believe the actual date was December 8.

  2. PS Although I am a retired lawyer, I have always been a weather buff, and I majored in meteorology for two years in undergraduate school, before changing my major to political science.

  3. Looks like we might beat that by one degree two times this week! Crazy. Thank you for sharing this information.

    1. Amber--I can't tell if you're referring to my reply or not, but I was talking about the coldest temperature ever in Eugene, not the hottest, but I do know the all-time record high is 108°, so you are certainly right in thinking we may break it this week!

    2. Amber – – I didn't look to see what city I had. I thought it was Eugene at the spot, not Salem, and I didn't notice that Joe also included record highs, so I think that's what you're talking about, what might happen this week. Right now, Eugene is predicted to top out at 107 degrees, one short of the all-time record. But I look up weather.gov for the forecast. The "forecast discussion" for the Willamette Valley in the Eugene area says that it is very possible that temperatures might go over 108° – – both on Wednesday and Thursday! Undoubtedly the same for Salem.

  4. Amber – – just one more. Joe did correct the all time low for Eugene from 10 below zero in 2013 to the 12 below zero in 1972. An odd fact is that, in both years, ithey were on December 8, even before the official start of winter!

  6. I believe Salem had 30 days of 90 degrees or higher in 2018, and that at least three of the past four years have exceeded the record number of such days as set in the previous year. Thus, I think we have more like 25-30 days of 90+ degree weather now per year

  7. According to the source listed Salem still averages just 16 days a year of 90 degree weather days. They claim their info is up to date thru 2019. The city might be averaging more days than that over the last few years but if their data goes way back to 1912 it would take a very long time to move the needle over 16 days a year.
