Minden is a 13,000 population city located in northwestern Louisiana located about 25 miles west of Shreveport. The coldest temperature record for Louisiana was set during the Great Blizzard of 1899.

During the Great Blizzard of 1899 record cold temperatures swept across the United States and all the way south to Cuba. In New Orleans, ice floes floated down the Mississippi River and into the Gulf of Mexico and the annual Mardi Gras parade was held up until the route could be shoveled clear of snow.
