Hottest Temperature Record for Each Month of the Year for Washington DC

Washington DC is one of the most historic, populated and most visited cities in the world. 



For all the people living in the Washington DC area and all the tourists thinking of visiting the city, here is a list of the hottest temperature records for each month of the year.

The list can be very useful for tourists visiting Washington DC at any time of the year. Also listed for each month are great places to visit in Washington DC during that time of the year.

In addition to the record hottest temperature and places to visit for each month, I'm also listing the date and year in which the record occurred. If you are not familiar with Washington DC you might be pretty surprised at some of the record hottest temperatures for each month.

The temperature records below date back to 1872. All the data is from the National Weather Service.

January—79 degrees

The record high temperature for January in Washington DC is 79 degrees which occurred on January 26, 1950. It's been 70 degrees or warmer in Washington DC many dozens of times since 1872.

Since the weather can be cold and unpredictable in January, a great place to visit in Washington DC during the first month of the year is the world famous Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

February—84 degrees

The record high temperature for February in Washington DC is 84 degrees, which occurred on February 25, 1930.

February is another month with unpredictable weather in the city. Another great indoor place to visit is the Unites States Capitol, which is usually filled with tons of hot air to keep the place warm.

March—93 degrees

The record high temperature for March is 93 degrees which occurred on March 23, 1907. It's only been 90 degrees three times in March in Washington DC and all three dates were in 1907.

The best place to visit in Washington DC in March is the Tidal Basin where the National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place each Spring starting in March.

April—95 degrees

The record high temperature for April in Washington DC is 95 degrees which has occurred on four dates.  The first time was on April 27, 1915, second time on April 23, 1960, third time on April 18, 1976 and the last time was on April 17, 2002.

April is a great month to head over to the United States Botanic Garden and see Spring blooming in the city.

May—99 degrees

The record high temperature for May in Washington DC is 99 degrees which occurred on May 31, 1991.

A great place to visit in May in Washington DC as the weather turns nice is the United States National Arboretum.

June —104 degrees

The record high temperature for June in Washington DC is 104 degrees which occurred on June 29, 2012.

As the weather stays nice in June it's a great time to visit the neoclassical Thomas Jefferson Memorial located in West Potomac Park. They light the memorial up at night and it's open until midnight daily (standard hours).

July—106 degrees

The record high temperature for July in Washington DC is 106 degrees which occurred on July 20, 1930. The 106 degrees is the overall record hottest temperature for Washington DC.

July is a fun time in Washington DC to go and visit the Lincoln Memorial on the western end of the National Mall. They also light up this memorial at night, and it's open 24 hours daily.

August —106 degrees

The record high temperature for August in Washington DC is 106 degrees which occurred on August 6, 1918. The 106 degrees is the hottest temperature ever recorded in Washington DC.

August is a great month in Washington DC to visit the world's tallest obelisk, the 555 foot high Washington Monument. Take the elevator ride to the top for magnificent views of the city.

September—104 degrees

The record high temperature for September in Washington DC is 104 degrees. That record high occurred on September 7, 1881. Only June, July, August and September have hit 100 degrees in the city.

The weather is still pretty good in September and it's a great time to head out to the great Smithsonian National Zoological Park.

October—96 degrees

The record high temperature for October in Washington DC is 96 degrees which occurred on October 5, 1941.

As the leaves change over and Halloween nears, October is a great time to visit the Neo-Gothic Washington National Cathedral which is the third largest church in the United States.

November—86 degrees

The record high temperature for November in Washington DC is 86 degrees which occurred on November 1, 1974.

A great historical site in Washington DC to visit in November is the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception which is the largest church in the United States.

December—79 degrees

The record high temperature for December in Washington DC is 79 degrees which occurred on December 7, 1998.

Have fun in December in Washington DC by visiting the National Christmas Tree which is located near the White House. The tree is lit nightly and is free to visit.
