Ten Coldest Weather Temperature Days Ever Recorded in Chicago

Weather temperature records in Chicago, Illinois have been officially kept since 1872. Here is a list of the ten coldest weather temperature days in Chicago history since 1872. There are actually 11 coldest weather temperature days listed because of ties. 



Out of the 11 coldest temperatures in Chicago history, the vast majority (7) occurred in January and that is the coldest month for the city with an average daily temperature of just 21 degrees. December has the second most days at 3 but it is only the third coldest month in Chicago with an average daily temperature of 26.6, while February only has one day on the list but is the second coldest month with an average daily temperature of 25.4.

The coldest weather temperature ever recorded in Chicago is -27 degrees which occurred on January 20, 1985. That was a very cold winter throughout most of the United States. The most recent really cold days in Chicago were on January 6, 2014, when it was -14 below zero and on February 28, 2015 when it was -10 below zero.

Chicago averages 131 days a year when the temperature drops below the freezing mark and 7 days a year when the temperature drops below zero. So it can certainly get ridiculously cold in the city of Chicago this winter or any winter.
