Mazama and Winthrop are two small towns located about 15 miles apart in northern Washington on the east slopes of the North Cascades Mountains about 10 miles west of North Cascades National Park and some 30 miles south of the Canadian border. The Seattle area, which is only about 100 miles southwest of Mazama and Winthrop, never gets anywhere near -48 degrees below zero but once you head into the Rocky Mountains temperatures drop pretty fast.
