For all the people living in the Philadelphia area and all the tourists thinking of visiting the city, here is a list of the hottest temperature records for each month of the year.
The list can be very useful for tourists visiting Philadelphia at any time of the year. Also listed for each month are great places to visit in Philadelphia during that time of the year.
In addition to the record hottest temperature and places to visit for each month, I'm also listing the date and year in which the record occurred. If you are not familiar with Philadelphia you might be pretty surprised at some of the record hottest temperatures for each month.
The temperature records below date back to 1873. All the data is from the National Weather Service.
January – 74 degrees
The record high temperature for January in Philadelphia is 74 degrees which occurred on January 26, 1950. It's been 70 degrees or warmer in Philadelphia 10 times since 1873.
Since the weather can be cold and unpredictable in January, a great place to visit in Philadelphia during the first month of the year is the world famous Franklin Institute.
February – 79 degrees
The record high temperature for February in Philadelphia is 79 degrees, which occurred on February 25, 1930.
February is another month with unpredictable weather in the city. Another great indoor place to visit is the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which was made famous when Rocky Balboa climbed the steps training for his heavyweight title shot.
March – 87 degrees
The record high temperature for March is 87 degrees, which occurred on March 29, 1945.
The best place to visit in Philadelphia in March is the One Liberty Observation Deck located on the 57th floor of the One Liberty Place building in Center City Philadelphia.
April – 95 degrees
The record high temperature for April in Philadelphia is 95 degrees which occurred on April 17, 2002. To date, it's been 90 degrees or hotter around 20 times in Philadelphia in April.
April is a great month to head over to the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania and see Spring blooming in the city.
May – 97 degrees
The record high temperature for May in Philadelphia is 97 degrees, which occurred on both May 30 and 31, 1991.
A great place to visit in May in Philadelphia as the weather turns nice is the historic Bartram's Gardens along the Schuylkill River. This is the oldest surviving botanical garden in the United States and dates back to 1728.
June – 102 degrees
The record high temperature for June in Philadelphia is 102 degrees, which occurred on June 29, 1934.
As the weather gets nice in Philadelphia in June, it's a great time to visit the iconic Liberty Bell located at 526 Market Street.
July – 104 degrees
The record high temperature for July in Philadelphia is 104 degrees, which occurred on both July 3 and July 10, 1934.
July is a fun time in Philadelphia to go and visit Independence Hall in the Independence National Historical Park where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.
August – 106 degrees
The record high temperature for August in Philadelphia is 106 degrees, which occurred on August 7, 1918. The 106 degrees is the hottest temperature ever recorded in Philadelphia.
August is a great month in Philadelphia to visit Fairmount Park along the banks of the Schuylkill River and see the Fairmount Water Works, Centennial Arboretum, Shofuso Japanese House and Garden and all the statues and sculptures in the park.
September – 102 degrees
The record high temperature for September in Philadelphia is 102 degrees. That record high occurred on September 7, 1881. Only June, July, August and September have hit 100 degrees in the city.
The weather is still pretty good in September and it's a great time to head out to the amazing Philadelphia Zoo.
October – 96 degrees
The record high temperature for October in Philadelphia is 96 degrees, which occurred on October 5, 1941.
As the leaves change over and Halloween nears, October is a great time to visit the unique and historic Philadelphia State Penitentiary which at one time housed Al Capone and is rumored to be haunted.
November – 84 degrees
The record high temperature for November in Philadelphia is 84 degrees which occurred on November 1, 1950.
A great historical site in Philadelphia to visit in November is the Reading Terminal Market located at 12th and Arch Streets in Center City Philadelphia.
December – 73 degrees
The record high temperature for December in Philadelphia is 73 degrees, which occurred on both December 4 and 7, 1998.
