Hilo, Hawaii is the Rainiest Weather City in the United States

When most people think of Hawaii they think of warmth and sunshine but the rainiest weather city in the United States is Hilo, Hawaii. Located on the western coast on Big Island of Hawaii, Hilo is the largest city on the island and it averages a whopping 126.61 inches of rainfall per year.

That averages out to 10.6 inches of rainfall per month. For comparison purposes, Las Vegas averages just 4.15 inches of rainfall per year while Phoenix averages just 7.46 annually. Los Angeles averages 12.02 inches of annual rainfall so Hilo averages over 30 times the rainfall Las Vegas gets, 16 times the rainfall Phoenix gets and over 10 times the rainfall Los Angeles gets annually.

For more comparison purposes, here are the 10 large population cities in the United States that average the most annual rainfall. As you can see below, Hilo averages over double what any city on the list averages annually. That is a lot of rain.

1. New Orleans - 62.7" of annual rainfall

2. Miami - 61.9"

3. Birmingham - 53.7"

4. Memphis - 53.7"

5. Jacksonville - 52.4"

6. Orlando - 53.7"

7. New York - 49.9"

8. Houston - 49.8"

9. Atlanta - 49.7"

10. Nashville - 47.3"

Despite all the annual rainfall, Hilo, Hawaii is a very popular tourist destination on the Big Island of Hawaii. If you are going to visit Hilo, Hawaii, though, be sure to be ready for rain in and around the city. The rest of the Big Island of Hawaii generally gets far less rainfall and some areas of the island are desert like in terms of annual rainfall.
